Review Zoo catch up with Singer, Drag Artist, Aphrodite Vox!

Please can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey so far?

I’m naturally quite shy and was initially uncertain about stepping into the spotlight as Aphrodite Vox. I questioned whether I should fully embrace this persona and bring it to the forefront. However, once I made the decision to fully commit, I’ve never looked back. The support and love I’ve received since then have been overwhelming and deeply affirming. This journey has been transformative, and I’m grateful for the respect and encouragement from my audience. It’s reinforced my belief in following one’s passion and embracing authenticity.

Can you tell us about your journey into the world of drag and music? How did you discover your passion for both?

My journey into drag and music has been a blend of personal discovery and creative evolution. I initially started as a professional dancer and model, which ignited my passion for performance. Over time, I began exploring music, driven by a desire to express myself in new ways.

The transition to drag began when I was invited by the organizer of the FreakParty Cologne to perform as a drag queen at the official after show party for RuPaul's "Werq the World" tour. Previously, I had been involved as a choreographer and dancer. This opportunity sparked my interest, and seeing myself in the mirror as Aphrodite for the first time was a transformative moment.

This year, I chose to elevate the persona of Aphrodite, transforming it into Aphrodite Vox. By bringing Aphrodite to the forefront and incorporating singing into my performances, I’ve embraced this new artistic identity, blending my love for performance and music into a unique and resonant experience.

What are some of the biggest influences on your music and drag performances? Are there any specific artists or performers who inspire you?

Some of the biggest influences on my music and drag performances are Madonna, whose innovative artistry and genre-blending have been a major inspiration, and the dynamic performances from the Netflix series „Pose“. These sources inspire me to push boundaries and explore diverse artistic expressions.

How do you balance the demands of creating music with the artistry involved in drag performance? Do you find the two art forms complement each other?

Balancing music creation with drag performance involves integrating both art forms into a cohesive creative process. Music provides the foundation for my performances, while drag adds a visual and emotional dimension that enhances the overall experience. I find that the two complement each other perfectly—music fuels the emotional and lyrical content of my drag shows, and drag adds a unique, dynamic presence that brings the music to life. Together, they create a richer, more immersive experience for the audience!

What message or themes do you aim to convey through your music and drag persona? How do these reflect your personal experiences or beliefs?

Through my music and drag persona, I aim to convey themes of empowerment, self-expression, and inclusivity. My work reflects my personal experiences of embracing my true self and celebrating individuality. I was initially unsure and anxious about how my work would be received, how my surroundings would react, and how I would feel. I feared the regret of wondering "what if?" So, when the opportunity arose, I decided to take the leap and make the most of it.

Today, I’m recording singles and creating my own music videos, and I’m grateful for the chance to share my story through this interview. I hope to be a beacon for anyone out there with dreams that push beyond their comfort zone. Believe in yourself first, and then others will believe in you too.

Can you share a particularly memorable performance or moment from your career that stands out to you? What made it so special?

A particularly memorable moment in my career was when I received heartfelt and personal messages from the audience after a performance. The impact of these words, which were deeply personal and touching, made the experience incredibly special. It’s indescribable how meaningful it is to connect with people in such a profound way. I am immensely grateful for the many individuals I’ve met along the way, and I hold them close in my heart. Their support and the personal connections we’ve made have truly enriched my journey.

Do you have any new releases you can tell us about?

Yes, I’m excited to share that my next single will be released on 1309.2024. This release is a significant step forward for me, and it will be a special gift for my community. I’m thrilled to continue evolving and sharing my artistry with you. Stay tuned for more details!

How do you approach the process of writing and producing your music? Do you have a specific routine or creative process you follow?

My approach to writing and producing music is deeply personal and emotional. I began writing during a challenging time in my personal life, specifically after a breakup. Since then, I only write lyrics when I’m feeling deeply moved or emotionally charged. For me, the best songs come from moments that shake me or inspire me in profound ways.

For instance, the lyrics for my upcoming single, set to release on 13.09.24, were written during a period of immense love and inspiration from my community, particularly from a remarkable woman named Miku. I can't fully express how grateful and proud I am to be able to create music that resonates so strongly with others. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how my work can positively impact and uplift those who support me.

What challenges have you faced as a drag queen in the music industry, and how have you overcome them?

While I haven’t personally faced direct negative experiences, I’ve noticed that people often underestimate the professionalism of drag performers and their music. This was a strong motivator for me to challenge those assumptions. There are many talented and professional drag artists, but we can sometimes be unfairly categorized. With Aphrodite Vox, I’m breaking those stereotypes and proving that drag is a powerful and elevated art form. Aphrodite Vox is now shining brightly, embodying the pinnacle of beauty and vocal excellence…

How do you incorporate your drag identity into your music videos and stage performances?  Can you describe your creative process for developing these visuals?

Incorporating my drag identity into my music videos and stage performances involves embracing and showcasing a highly feminine and expressive persona. I meticulously plan each element to align with this vision. For photoshoots and performances, I ensure that I am completely smooth and wear figure-enhancing or sexy outfits that highlight my drag persona.

My makeup, expertly done by my dear friend Plinio, is always on point, contributing to the overall polished look. It's crucial to me that every aspect of Aphrodite Vox is flawless, from the outfits and makeup to the performance itself. This attention to detail ensures that when Aphrodite Vox appears, everything is perfectly aligned with the character’s essence and the artistic vision.

What advice would you give to aspiring drag queens and musicians who are just starting their careers?

I believe that everyone must find their own path and explore their unique style. As a drag queen, you have the freedom to experiment and express yourself in various ways. It's important to reflect on what you want to embody, highlight, and achieve through your art. Ask yourself why you are doing this and what your goals are. Understanding your purpose and vision will help guide your journey and shape your identity as an artist.

What can fans expect from your upcoming projects or performances? Are there any exciting collaborations or releases on the horizon?

Fans can look forward to an exciting array of upcoming projects and performances. I’ll be performing at various clubs and events, bringing my energy to diverse audiences. One of the highlights will be the release of my new single on September 13, 2024. Alongside this, I’m also working on an accompanying music video that promises to be visually stunning and creatively captivating. Stay tuned for these exciting developments and more, as I continue to share my music and performances with you.

Do you feel drag artists face tougher challenges in the music industry, or do you think the drag art helps?

Drag artists do face unique challenges in the music industry, such as navigating stereotypes and breaking through preconceived notions about drag performance. However, the drag art itself can also be a powerful asset. It provides a distinctive and memorable persona that can capture attention and create a strong brand identity.

While overcoming these challenges requires resilience and innovation, drag remains a beautiful and uplifting art form that aims to convey positivity and joy. My goal is to express this positive spirit through my work, celebrating the transformative power of drag.

How long does it take you to get ready for shows, do you change your look depending on the show or do you have your set look?

Getting ready for shows usually takes several hours. I start with a full-body shave, which is quite time-consuming. My makeup application, including hair styling, takes between 2 to 3 hours to ensure everything is perfect. I adapt my look to fit different concepts or settings, while still maintaining a signature style that defines Aphrodite Vox. Each appearance is meticulously crafted to match the mood and requirements of the event, ensuring a visually captivating performance.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is currently characterized by a vibrant blend of reggaeton and dancehall, with subtle influences from Oriental Eastern music. This fusion creates an energetic and captivating experience. However, I’m also exploring other genres and styles, aiming to connect with my listeners through a diverse range of musical expressions. Each project brings a new facet to my artistry, reflecting my evolving creative journey.

"What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time"?

In my spare time, I enjoy a variety of activities that bring me joy and inspiration. I cherish spending quality time with family and friends, which provides a grounding balance to my busy life. I’m also a big fan of Netflix and cinema, often indulging in films and series that spark my creativity. As a foodie, I love exploring new cuisines and trying out recipes, and traveling is a major passion of mine—whether it’s discovering new cities or experiencing different cultures. These hobbies not only enrich my life but also inspire my work as an artist.

Is there anything you’d like to mention?
